What makes quality bamboo? |
Raw Material
– Be certain the wood is composed of mature stalks and properly dried.
Adhesives – Should be water-resistant and contain no
urea-formaldehyde, which off-gases in the home.
Milling – Look at the end of a
sample. Of course, the cut should be square. If you see small splits or gaps
between the strips, that's not good. If you notice the splits or gaps have been
filled with adhesive, find another manufacturer.
Drying -
Most bamboo moisture content is 9-10 percent. A range of 6 to 8 percent, as with EcoTimber, is better for climates that are dry or seasonally humid.
Lengths – Watch the short
pieces. Typically, they have been cut because they weren't straight.
EcoTimber only uses 6 ft. lengths.
Janka
hardness test: Bamboo runs 1,350 to 1,600 lb/sq. in, depending on the
grain. The rating is a measurement of the force necessary to embed a .444-inch
steel ball to half its diameter in wood. It is the industry standard for gauging
the ability to tolerate denting and normal wear. |

Our flooring is made from
top quality, mature stalks harvested from bamboo
plantations -- not from wild habitats. Bamboo is a
highly renewable resource, harvestable four to six years
after being planted. |

Its low
moisture-absorption properties make it ideal where moisture or
humidity might pose a challenge for other types of flooring. The
flooring is made with a low-VOC adhesive that easily meets the
strict European E1 standard for indoor air quality.
Solid bamboo: 3 5/8"-wide planks can be nailed to
plywood or glued to concrete.
Engineered Bamboo: a sandable wear layer of plantation pine and
firs can be nailed to plywood, glued to concrete or floated.
